Thinking About College
I’ll be a senior next year, so, like many other kids almost out of high school, I’m thinking a lot about college. It seems I’m not the only one thinking about my personal secondary education, as whenever I talk to extended family, neighbors, or my father, the conversation ends up college bound, just like me.
The most common question I get is “What do you want to study?” The most common response I get when I reply is “Well, that’s an unusual combination.” I suppose my majors of choice are unusually paired, but it still makes me laugh every time I hear them call my combination “unusual”. What else would they expect from me? Wild, untamable, eccentric me, the lady in love with so many a varied subject. And yet, they are surprised when I answer them with “I want to double major in Physics and fine metal working.”
I really don’t see how my major is so strange. Physics, a fascinating hard science paired with a fine art? How is that so strange? Maybe a little uncommon, I suppose, but it’s not like I said something like Cryptozoology and mining. Maybe if those were my choices, I would understand the quizzical looks. I’m beginning to wonder if the reason my choices are treated as such an oddity is these people have been looking at me with puzzlement for so long, they don’t know how else to respond when I speak.
That too makes me chuckle.
